Mining Tenders & Vendor Portals in South Africa

Mining procurement works differently from government tendering: the big spend rarely appears as a public tender notice. Mines buy through vendor databases, register once on a mine’s supplier portal, and buyers invite you to RFQs directly. If you sell into the mining belt and you’re not on the portals, you’re invisible.

How mines actually buy

• Vendor registration first, most mining houses run supplier portals on platforms like Coupa and SAP Ariba. Registering is usually free, though some contractor pre-qualification services charge a subscription, and a few mining houses have no open registration at all.
• RFQs by invitation, day-to-day purchases go to registered vendors matching the commodity codes you selected at registration.
• Public tenders for capital projects, shafts, plants and large-scale construction do get advertised, often alongside SOE-style portals.

Local procurement is policy, not charity

The Mining Charter and each mine’s Social and Labour Plan commit spend to host-community and black-owned suppliers. Practically, that means a business based near an operation, in Rustenburg, Steelpoort, Kathu, Carletonville, often gets preferential access: dedicated local-supplier desks, ring-fenced packages and supplier-development programmes. Say so in your registration if you’re local.

What the portals ask for

Broadly the government pack (CIPC, tax pin, B-BBEE, bank letter) plus mining-specific extras:

• Health and safety file / OHS policy (and often a safety officer’s details)
• Letter of good standing with the Compensation Fund (COIDA)
• For on-site work: medical fitness certificates and site-specific inductions
• Quality certifications (ISO) for manufactured goods

Working the mining belt

1. Map the operations within reach, the mining supplier directory lists South African mining companies and their vendor registration portals in one place.
2. Register on every relevant portal with identical, current documents.
3. Pick commodity codes carefully, they drive which RFQs you’re invited to.
4. Watch public mining and SOE tenders too Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga carry the bulk of mining-adjacent opportunities.
